The Nature of Madness

This is the most memorable scene from Herzog's fantastic Encounters at the End of the World. That poor, adorable lunatic.

I saw Encounters at the End of the World when it first came out and have been haunted by this scene of a deranged penguin running toward certain death ever since. On occasion and without warning, this mad penguin starts waddling furiously through my brain, terrifying the bejesus out of me.

However, you can always count on Werner to find humor in the dark and disturbing:

Is there a such thing as insanity among penguins? I don't mean that a penguin might believe he or she is Lenin or Napoleon Bonaparte, but could they just go crazy because they've had enough of their colony?

That is such a good question and it pretty much sums up everything I love about Werner Herzog.

Napoleon Bonaparte, Penguin

Beware the Napoleonic penguin.

A penguin's gotta do what a penguin's gotta do.
